SITE PREPARATION - elevator job

So first topic is SITE PREPARATION

Site preparation is basically making the site ready for elevator installation. According to the design and the drawings will be different.

You can check out the classification section to find out the types of lifts.
So when the drawing arrives according to the information we send to the design center, we have to check the drawing to the site situation and by having a meeting with customer or customer representative. We have to discuss all the things we required for the installation.  Floor heights needs to be checked, shaft size , pit depth, headroom, machine room and storage space. The shaft preparation is a continues process. All the things under the preparation section need to be covered. In companies there will be dedicated team for this works. They will have procedure to carry out these processes. After the site preparation the site will be handed over to installation team for inspection. In between this according to the site readiness date the material would have ordered for manufacture in the factory and delivery have to take place in the  site.

The one who has the responsibility of this Site Preparation should document all the meetings and communication with the client. The verbal communication is not valid unless you are recording the calls and discussions. In some countries this is illegal, the paper documentation or mail documentations are to be done. And you can save them online in any cloud services free or paid. this will allow you access to all of these documents anywhere.  You also need to save the site location.

The first thing you have to get from the site is the Engineers number. This things depends upon what type of site is yours. For a highly coordinated big project you will have dedicated personal or division you have to contact for your preparation purposes. Get all the involved personals number, Email details. Save them.  Now check the drawing and study the drawing. Make sure you have the approved drawing with you. If the site is in construction stage the check the construction of the shaft. If found any difference alert client and the design department at once. get a conclusion and avoid problems in the future. If the site is ready below are the main things you need to check to ensure error-less  project.

1. Floor heights.
2. Shaft dimensions

You can see the link    SHAFT DIMENSION CHART

3. What shaft is made of?
4. Bracket positions are acceptable?
5. Shaft does not have projections.
6. Shaft is clean and painted?
7. Storage for materials
8. Electrical matters
9. Positioning of controller and other parts
10. Position of electric source.

Preparation is not a ONE day work. You need to follow up the processes.

Stairway Elevators - types of elevators

Stairway elevators are generally installed in homes where someone in the family has problems with mobility. This type of domestic elevators simply runs on a rail up and down and existing staircase. They can run either in a straight line or around a curved stairway. Stairway elevators can be constructed both inside and outside the home.

Dumbwaiters Elevators - types of elevators / lifts

They are small freight elevators intended to carry objects rather than people , Whenever groceries or laundry need to be sent up and down the stairs without making unnecessary trips that can quickly tire people , people can simply place what needs to be transported in the dumbwaiter and press the button to send it up or down stairs. Dumbwaiters are most often built into or adjacent to a wall.

A simple dumbwaiter is a movable frame in a shaft, dropped by a rope on a pulley, guided by rails; most dumbwaiters have a shaft, car, and capacity smaller than those of passenger elevators, usually 100 to 1000 lbs

Passenger Elevators - types of elevator / lift

Passenger Elevators - types of elevator / lift

Passenger / Domestic  elevators which are intended to move passengers up and down stairs in a multilevel residence are quite similar to those used in large public buildings. They can be built either inside the home or outside the home and can be pneumatic vacuum, electric, hydraulic or cable elevators. Most often domestic elevators designed for carrying passengers in a residential setting only carry perhaps two to four people safely and comfortably.  In the passenger elevators safety is taken very seriously in all manner. For over speed and door position and locking detection all are checked all the time.

Hospital Stretcher Lift / Elevator

Mostly this type of lift has specific kind of access control,This type of elevator is usually hydraulic or traction based depending on the location of the machine room. They are specifically manufactured to be low-noise bed elevators that smoothly transport patients, doctors, nurses and hospital staff between floors, allowing them the utmost in comfort. Because hospital bed elevators are only used for transporting patients and hospital staff they arrived at their location quite quickly, eliminating lengthy waits. Many of these bed elevators are key operated so as to prohibit use by the general public. They usually are smaller than bed elevators.

Hospital Bed Elevators

Hospital bed elevators generally transport patients who are not well enough to sit up even in a wheelchair. One of the features of bed elevators should be its ability to transport the patient has smoothly as possible with minimal amount of bumping and jostling. Many contemporary bed elevators are manufactured to consume extremely low amounts of power and to be durable with a number of safety features built-in. Hospital bed elevators generally draw very little power so that should there be a power outage they are still operational off the hospital's backup power supply. Most often there will be a rear and a front entry to the elevator cabin.

According to building type - Elevator classification

Elevators will be classified according to building type to 6 main types as follows:

  1. Hospital Elevators.   READ MORE >>
  2. Commercial Elevators.
  3. Residential /Domestic Elevators.   READ MORE >>
  4. Parking buildings Elevators
  5. Agricultural Elevators.
  6. Industrial Elevators.

Pneumatic Elevators

Pneumatic elevators are raised and lowered by controlling air pressure in a chamber in which the elevator sits. By simple principles of physics; the difference in air pressure above and beneath the vacuum elevator cab literally transports cab by air. It is the vacuum pumps or turbines that pull cab up to the next Floor and the slow release of air pressure that floats cab down. They are especially ideal for existing homes due to their compact design because excavating a pit and hoist way are not required.

Climbing elevator

Climbing Elevator

Climbing elevator   hold their own power device on them, mostly electric or combustion engine. Climbing elevators are often used in work and construction areas.

Machine-Room-Less Elevators

Machine room less elevator

Machine-Room-Less Elevators are typically traction elevators that do not have a dedicated machine room above the elevator shaft. The machine sits in the override space and the controls sit above the ceiling adjacent to the elevator shaft. Machine-room-less elevators are becoming more common; however, many maintenance departments do not like them due to the hassle of working on a ladder as opposed to within a room. They are becoming common because this saves productive space in the buildings.

Gearless Traction Elevators

Gearless Traction Elevators

Gearless Traction Elevators have the wheel attached directly to the motor. Gear-less traction elevators are capable of speeds up to 2000 feet per minute. They use synchronous motors with permanent magnets. These elevators will have more controlled comfort ride. They will be smooth and efficient and produce less sound.

Geared Traction Elevators

picture reference from electricalknowhow.com
Geared Traction Elevators have a gearbox that is attached to the motor, which drives the wheel that moves the ropes. This is useful to use low KW motor and reduce cost. Geared traction elevators are capable of travel speeds up to 500 feet per minute. geared machines are less efficient compared to the gear-less one.

Traction Elevators -types of elevators(lifts)

Traction  ELEVATOR

Traction elevators are lifted by ropes, which pass over a sheave attached to an electric motor above the elevator shaft. They are used for mid and high-rise applications and have much higher travel speeds than hydraulic elevators. A counter weight makes the elevators more efficient. Traction elevators have 3 main types as follows

2. Gear-less Traction Elevators READ MORE >>

3. Machine-Room-Less Elevators  READ MORE >>

Roped Hydraulic Elevators

Roped hydraulic elevator is driven by the same piston but the piston here is connected to elevator car using ropes through pulley( sheaves). This can be direct roping or 2:1 roping. This can also use to double the travelling distance of the elevator.

Non-telescoping Hydraulic Elevators - types of elevators(lift)

In this type the piston plunger will not be telescopic. it have only one Piston. It differ from holed hydraulic elevator as its piston cylinder is not going in to the earth.

Telescopic Hydraulic Elevators - elevator(lift) types

Telescopic hydraulic elevators have  the telescoping pistons  fixed at the base of the pit and do not require a  hole below the pit and has 2 or 3 pieces of telescoping pistons. Telescoping pistons allow up to 50 feet of travel distance. Its load carrying capacity will be a little less than the non-telescopic one.

Holed Hydraulic Elevators

They have a piston cylinder that extends below the floor of the elevator pit, which accepts the retracting piston as the elevator descends. Some configurations have a telescoping piston that collapses and requires a shallower hole below the pit. Max travel distance is approximately 60
feet.

Hydraulic Elevators

Hydraulic elevators are driven  by a piston at the bottom of the elevator that pushes the elevator to up levels. They are used for less height applications of 2-8 floors and travel at a maximum speed of 59 meter per minute. The pump room for hydraulic elevators is located at the lowest floor adjacent to the elevator shaft. Hydraulic elevators have many two main types

Types of Elevators / Classification of Elevators

An elevator (or lift in the Commonwealth excluding Canada) is a type of vertical transport equipment that efficiently moves people or goods between floors (levels, decks) of a building, vessel or other structures. Elevators are generally powered by electric motors that either drive traction cables or counterweight systems like a hoist, or pump hydraulic fluid to raise a cylindrical piston like a jack.

There are three types of convoying methods in buildings, Elevators & Escalators & Ramps, and they have different dimensions and uses according to building type & number of users in it.

How Is Job In Elevator Industry

Dear friends talking about the Job in Elevator industry, first of all we should talk about "A JOB".
A JOB is a task or piece of work, especially one that is paid.
                  OR
a paid position of regular employment.

So when some one pays you for your work its not a job. When he gives you work regularly.. then you have a job.

In the case of Elevator Industry you can have a job both inside and outside the company.

1. As a company employee
2. As a subcontractor to company.

The main Area of works are Factory part and Executing part. Executing part will be explained briefly in this post.

In this industry most matters is your experience, than your qualification. But when you start in a company it matters. Till a certain level experience is the main thing, but beyond that stuff turns over.

Main designation you may see in an elevator/ lift company are

1. Manager
2. Sales manager
3. Sales personal & coordinator
4. Field manager
5. Installation head
6. Service head
7. Installation Engineers
8. Service Engineers/ PROJECT MANAGERS
9. Installation coordinator
10. Service Coordinator
11. Installation technicians
12. Service technicians
13. Safety department
14. Quality department

In a multinational or a big company you could have found many chains of job post to withstand the load.

Normally all the posts will not have much more vacancy.
but some posts have more demand

1. Sales person
2. Installation technician
3. Service technician
4. Installation / Service engineers
5. Project managers
6. supervisor ( installation / service )

so i can explain you these five areas as well as i know.

1. Sales Person

As you obviously know sales person will be selling the product to the potential customers. The main thing all the companies will look consciously is the EXPERIENCE. Most cases the Qualification for these jobs will be MBA. Some places they will look or a Degree. But in good companies the want B tech/M tech/BE.

Your knowledge about the current market is very important. If you are a fresher then just go join Local companies for the experience purpose. Most of the good companies seek for 3 - 4 year experienced personals.

As you know the pressure on a sales person will be huge in an emerging market. But if your company is well established then may be a little free air is there for you. More about the sales category will be published soon.

2. Installation Technician

The main work , the physical work happening in the job flow is handled by this category. Normally the qualification will be ITI  or any other technical qualification. There are also some short term  courses in this subject. But these are turned out to be useless.

The main thing is experience. You should know the work to get the job. The experience  can be earned by working with subcontractors. To work with good companies you need minimum ITI qualification or very good experience and recommendation. After material delivered to the site when site is ready the installation teams work starts. More about the work will be posted separately and the link  is here

3. Service Technician

Service technician is for the existing installation. Their work starts by taking over a installation from the installation department. The maintenance team should check and confirm all  the checklist points and take over the site to service departments. The main responsibilities are

         1. Call backs ( Lift break downs or complaints )
         2. Scheduled service (Monthly or in Fixed intervals )
         3. System improvements
         4. Repair
         5. house keeping

Some companies will have a separate team for each of these things. That will be according to the company's business volume. Normally ITI qualification is enough. The qualification is according to the work and stages. For example...  for minor break downs a technician with a sufficient knowledge is enough but in case of a major breakdown,  more skilled man power is needed. More about it is here

4. Installation/ Service Engineers

These people will be doing the planning and all over looking. They act like a connection chain between who works in the site and who works in the office. so they should have good technical knowledge and the office things. Most of the companies will choose experienced persons with technical degree qualification. Also Diploma qualification can achieve this  position by experience. More of this category is here.

5. Project Managers

They will be recruited to the company when the sales team brings huge project in to the account. That thing can not be handled by engineers alone. Most of the project managers are Experienced engineers or they would have specialized in project management in their studies. More about them is here

6. Supervisors

These guys will be looking after some site in all manor. Technical problems, talking to customer, managing the manpower at site. And they will also have to check the quality of the work.

More about each and every category will be availed soon by posts
